The newer POS Port Adapter provides the same level of high switching performance and application of network services as the existing Packet over SONET/SDH interface processor (POSIP) in a single-wide port adapter design. This enables the use of the second port adapter bay, available in all VIP models for the Cisco 7500, thereby increasing configuration flexibility and density while lowering overall infrastructure costs. For example, the VIP4 can support configurations with two POS port adapters or one POS port adapter and any other single-wide port adapter such as serial, multi-channel, Ethernet, or Fast Ethernet. The VIP2 supports an aggregate 400 Mbps so the use of dual POS may not always be appropriate in VIP2-based configurations. The VIP4, supporting an aggregate of 800 Mbps, is often better suited for high-speed applications. In addition, the POS port adapter can support ATM Forum payload scrambling and CRC-32 error detection concurrently, which the POSIP cannot. The POS port adapter also extends the benefits of Packet over SONET/SDH connectivity to the Cisco 7200 simplifying the backbone architecture and spares logistics.
