Used Cisco Secure PIX 515 Firewall

The Cisco Secure PIX Firewall series has established a strong number 1 position in the standalone firewall market by a combination of its industry-leading performance end-to-end security services.

The Cisco Secure PIX Firewall series has established a strong number-one position in the standalone firewall market by a combination of its industry-leading performance (as shown by Key Labs, Inc. Firebench testing) and its unique position as one of the key elements in Cisco end-to-end security services. The integrated hardware/software Cisco Secure PIX Firewall series delivers high security without impacting network performance, scaling to meet the entire range of customer requirements.

Although the PIX 520 is the undisputed leader in high-end perimeter security, the advent of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and increasing numbers of small and medium-sized businesses into the Internet marketplace has expanded the demands of the firewall market. More organizations today demand powerful firewall features affordably priced for global VPN implementations, for distribution to regional branches, or for small to medium-sized businesses looking for security on a budget.

The PIX 515 is designed to answer this need. Now, with the release of PIX v5.0 software, and all subsequent v5.x releases, all appliances, including both the PIX 515-R and PIX 515-UR, fully support the implementation of IPSec. This release allows the PIX to create and/or terminate VPN tunnels between two PIXes, between a PIX and any Cisco VPN enabled router, and between a PIX and the Cisco Secure VPN Client.

PIX-515: Restricted Software Bundle

The PIX 515-R with the Restricted software license is the entry-level Cisco solution for those organizations looking to deploy high-performance security with basic firewall functionality. It provides enough power for over 50,000 concurrent connections and up to 170 Mbps of throughput.

The PIX 515-R-BUN, with support for up to three Ethernet interfaces, is an especially cost-effective solution for many smaller companies that choose to host their Web site on the outside of their firewall, or through an Internet service provider (ISP), and yet have a need for an inexpensive price/performance firewall solution. It is also ideal for remote sites that require only two-way communication with their corporate network, and situations in which the corporate network provides all Web services on its enterprise firewall.

PIX-515: Unrestricted Software

The PIX 515-UR (unrestricted) provides all the functionality of the PIX 515-R-BUN, as well as fail-over functionality, and up to six 10/100 Ethernet ports. These four additional ports allow for more robust traffic configurations as well as hosting a protected DMZ for hosting a Web site or performing URL filtering and virus detection. Designed for mid-sized organizations, the PIX 515 UR provides nearly 170 Mbps of throughput and over 100,000 concurrent connections for fast, reliable, and affordable security protection.

PIX 515: Fail-Over Bundle

Firewall redundancy is critical for those organizations whose Internet, intranet, or extranet connections are their corporate lifeline. Every minute a firewall is down means lost revenue, opportunity, or critical information. Cisco has created a new fail-over bundle package for the PIX 515 UR, enabling this need to be met simply and inexpensively. This package provides organizations with a second firewall, especially designed to run exclusively in fail-over mode, for a fraction of the cost of a standard PIX 515 UR bundle.

Upgrading the PIX-515-R to the PIX-515-UR

As businesses grow, so do their security needs. That's why today Cisco has developed an affordable upgrade path from the PIX-515-R to the PIX-515-UR, allowing a simple upgrade path to increased functionality and performance tomorrow. The PIX-515-SW-UPG= with the PIX-MEM-32= transforms a restricted licensed PIX 515 to unrestricted and will not cost you anymore than if you had purchased the unrestricted license.
