The Charles STS 3192 Span Termination
System is a universal Tl transport system. STS offers you a full range of repeaters and
other advanced plug-ins for any Tl application. Although simple in concept, a TI span
termination system can be most complex in design to make it sufficiently powerful,
flexible and reliable to meet your needs and the needs of your most demanding customers.
For fast installation and circuit turn-up and long lasting reliable TI connections, your

Application
The Charles STS 3192 Span Termination
System is a flexible, feature-rich Tl termination and transport system in a very compact
package.
Though it meets the needs for any central office application, STS is ideally suited to
providing TI metallic span extensions from outside plant cabinets, huts and CEVs that are
fed by fiber facilities. These TI spans can feed downline loop carrier systems or can be
used to provide customer DS I services.
STS is also useful in business remote terminal applications where a fiber facility is
terminated on a lightwave multiplexer at a customer location, and DS I extensions are
routed to various locations within the building via the STS system.
STS provides a plug-in unit that meets every application need, from long span powering
office repeaters, to short span repeaters, to repeaters with built-in network interface
units.
The STS 23" shelf can be equipped with up to 28 span powering office repeaters, or
other plug-in units, matching the capacity of DS3 lightwave multiplexer systems. STS
central office or CEV bays can provide up to 224 plug-ins in a single 7' x 23"
assembly.

Plug-in Cards
In addition to the eight plug-in
cards described on the previous page, the STS System includes the following optional
modules:
3192-9F Alarm Module
Provides three shelf alarm indications and corresponding alarm relay contacts. Front panel
LED indicate if one or more repeaters in the shelf experienced a receive loss of signal,
excessive bipolar violations, or an open internal fuse.
3192-FL Fault Locate
Unit
Provides access to three separate fault locate pairs. An internal DC-DC
converter generates the voltage necessary to power active fault locate filters.
3192-OW Order Wire
Module
Provides access to, and power for, one order wire pair toward the span.
Also provides a two-wire access to a Class 5 switch line circuit.
Shelves
Several different STS shelves are
available to meet your space or installation method requirements. Preconnectorized cables
in various lengths are also available to speed up system installation and wiring.
3192-11 23"
Connectorized Mounting Shelf
Designed to house up to 28 TI transmission modules, plus one 3192-9F Alarm Module.
Preconnectorized with four 32-pair connectors.
319-02 19" Connectorized Mounting Shelf
Houses up to 22 TI transmission modules, plus one alarm module. Provides four 25-pair
connectors.
3192-SA and 3192-SB Shelf
Assemblies The 3192-SA and 3192-SB shelf assemblies are special versions of the 3192-1 1
shelf. They are equipped with a wirewrap adapter on one or two of the shelf connectors.
3192-WR and 319-04 Wirewrap Shelves
The STS family includes both 23" (3192-WR) and 19" (319-04) wirewrap shelves.
These shelves provide wirewrap terminals on the backplane for installer signal lead
connections.
