BlackDiamond 6800 Series
BlackDiamond 6800 series switches are ideal for network core and data centers with high density 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet requirements and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interconnections.
The carrier-class reliability and security features and NEBS Level 3 compliance have allowed several service providers across the world to deploy BlackDiamond 6800 series in their Metro aggregation and core networks.
With three generations of advanced switching and I/O modules supported with the hardened ExtremeWare operating system, BlackDiamond 6800 switches provide enterprises and service providers with the needed capacity and functionality including:
- High-functionality switching and routing protocols for network scaling
- Advanced traffic management and Policy-Based Quality of Service (QoS) for revenue-generating, bandwidth-based services
The BlackDiamond 6800 switch architecture can provide high-performance across all features at interface speeds ranging from 10/100 to Gigabit to 10 Gigabit Ethernet—the features and bandwidth are there when you need it. With features such as Policy-Based QoS and 8 queues per port, bidirectional rate shaping and bandwidth management, you can prioritize mission-critical applications and traffic to deliver maximum performance to delay-sensitive applications such as voice and video. In addition, the VMAN and MPLS features allow a scalable, cost-effective mechanism to deliver point-to-point and point-to-multipoint Layer 2 VPNs across metro networks.
Carrier-class availability and connectivity can maximize uptime and return on investment, so users are never completely without network service. The infrastructure capabilities are delivered using advanced ASICs, hardware and software technologies, including:
- Redundant load-sharing hot-swappable power supplies, redundant management and switch fabric, and passive backplane
- Link aggregation of up to 8 links in a single trunk with sub-second failover and fail-back capabilities
- OSPF, RIPv1 and RIPv2, IP Multicast, BGP4 routing for Layer 3 redundancy for high availability and throughput
- Extreme Standby Router Protocol (ESRP), Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS), Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and STP extensions from Extreme Networks, and link aggregation for Layer 3 and Layer 2 redundancy within network uplinks to ensure that failure in other equipment will not result in lost connectivity for users.
- High levels of security at the core of the network with ACLs, Network Login, and Denial of Service protection features.
The BlackDiamond 6800 switch has ten slots, two of which provide control- and data-plane resiliency with redundant management and switching module (MSM-3). Eight I/0 slots can be used for a mix of I/O and Application modules:
- 10GX3: for 10 gigabit connectivity
- G24T3: for 10/100/1000BASE-TX connectivity
- G16X3: 1000BASE-X mini-GBIC connectivity
- G8Xi: 1000BASE-X GBIC-based connectivity
- F48Ti: 48-port of 10/100BASE-TX connectivity
- F32Fi: 32-port 100BASE-FX multi-mode fiber connectivity
- MPLS: for Multiprotocol Label Switching
Both AC and DC PSU are supported
In large enterprises, the high density of the BlackDiamond 6800 switch allows the core to act as an aggregation point for a large number of switches at the edge (e.g., Summit switches) and distribution (e.g., Alpine switches).
For service providers, BlackDiamond 6800 series switches incorporate reliability features such as passive backplane, redundant power, and redundant control and switching fabric combined with carrier-class I/O modules. The redundancy features and high-density interfaces are key to making BlackDiamond 6800 the switch of choice for deploying Metro Area Networks (MANs).
