Gigabit Multilayer Switching (GMS) Software is a high performance operating
system for the 3Com®
SuperStack® 3 Switch 4900 and 3Com®
Switch 40x0 Gigabit Ethernet switch families.
Leveraging many years
of 3Com's experience in software development, GMS is a mature operating system
that provides industry-leading, feature-rich Layer 2 functionality, Layer 3
switching for IP networks, enhanced convergence and QoS services, and innovative
features such as support for XRN™ Technology. 3Com GMS software provides strict
adherence to standards, a simplified user experience and feature consistency
with other 3Com switches.
3Com® Gigabit Multilayer Switching Software is
the foundation for 3Com's patented XRN Technology, and includes support for
Distributed Device Management (DDM), Distributed Link Aggregation (DLA) and
Distributed Resilient Routing (DRR), the key components of an XRN Distributed
Fabric.
With the Advanced Feature License, GMS also provides support for
the GBIC Fabric Interconnect, which allows an XRN Fabric to span geographical
distance from hundreds of meters to up to 70 Kilometers; this allows XRN
Distributed Fabrics to be easily deployable in campus environments and also in
metropolitan network infrastructures.
3Com Gigabit Multilayer Switching software and XRN™ (eXpandable Resilient
Networking) technology allow implementation of high availability configurations
using two interconnected Switch 40x0 or SuperStack® 3 Switch 4900 famly
switches, scaling the backbone to 48 wirespeed Gigabit Layer 3 switching ports
(with purchase of optional 3Com
XRN Interconnect Kit, or GBIC Fabric Interconnect with GMS Advanced Feature
License)
Advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 functionality—such as multicast filtering,
enhanced QoS/CoS services, virtual LANs, and multilayer traffic classification
and prioritization—provides network-wide traffic control
Layer 3 switching capabilities—such as as OSPF, IP unicast using static
routes, RIP/RIPv2, and CIDR—help enhance performance, provide network control
and security, and enable routing between VLANs (OSPF available with purchase of
GMS Advanced Feature License)
Support for high availability software features such as Link Aggregation
using 802.3ad, Resilient links, Spanning Tree and Rapid Spanning Tree (802.1w),
seven groups of RMON, and e-mail alerts
Security features like RADIUS client support and Routed Access Control lists
protect sensitive network information and ensure that users have access to
authorized resources
