High performance, convergence-ready, modular Gigabit
switch
The 3Com Switch 7700 modular LAN switch delivers high
performance, multilayer, Gigabit and Fast Ethernet switching in an integrated
chassis platform.
Three chassis variations are offered:
- the Switch
7700R 8-slot chassis with six module slots and two fabric slots for running
a high-availability redundant switch fabric configuration;
- the Switch 7700
7-slot chassis, with six module slots and one fabric slot, for installations
where fabric redundancy is not required;
- and the Switch 7700
4-slot chassis, with three module slots and one fabric slot, for smaller
installations.
Starter Kits simplify the ordering of the desired
chassis configuration. All come with the respective chassis and preinstalled
switch fabric, management module, power supply, and fan tray. Switch 7700 I/O
switching modules are ordered separately. A redundant fabric is an option
available for the Switch 7700R 8-slot chassis. Other options include redundant
power supplies, SFP's, GBICs, enhanced feature software, and
spares.

Local switching on modules: reduces congestion to enable applications to run
faster, improving the quality of video and voice traffic
Jumbo frames: increased efficiency through support for packets of up to 9KB,
ideal for server-to-server backups
802.3ae 10 Gigabit standard capable: investment protection, knowing your
core will scale to meet future bandwidth requirements
Hardware Multicast Routing: reduced packet loss and latency times are vital
for voice and video
Network Login: blocks all packets onto the network until users are
authenticated (802.1X RADIUS) to increase network security and enables user
accountability
Access Control Lists (ACL's): constrains users to areas of the network they
are authorized for, using Layer 2/3/4 content-based packet prioritization and
traffic filtering
Layer 3 Protocol Authentication: MD5 authentication prevents unauthorized
Layer 3 devices joining the network, reducing snooping
Traffic classification: rule based packet identification (e.g. voice) and
prioritization to improve quality, or block unwanted applications
Bandwidth limitation: both input and output queues control traffic and
prevent saturation based on application or location
Bandwidth management: both input and output queues provide packet
prioritization and management to prevent packet discard or delay due to
congestion; vital for voice and video
Switching fabric redundancy available in 8-slot chassis, with purchase of
optional 3Com Switch 7700R Gigabit Ethernet Redundant Switching Fabric,
3C16857R
BGP4 (Border Gateway Protocol version 4), IS-IS (Intermediate
System-to-Intermediate System), MSTP (Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol), and SNMP
v3 (Simple Network Management Protocol version 3) available with purchase of 3Com
