3ComŽ Switch 7700 4-Slot Gigabit Ethernet Fabric Module - 3C16872
3COM 3ComŽ Switch 7700 4-Slot Gigabit Ethernet Fabric Module 3C16872
The 3COM 3C16872 you're interested in is a: Gigabit Ethernet Switch Fabric for the Switch 7700 4-Slot.
Gigabit Ethernet Switch Fabric for the Switch 7700
4-Slot This component is the switch fabric module for the 3Com Switch
7700 4-slot chassis. As the Switch 4400
4-Slot Starter Kit (3C16870) ships with the same module, ordering of this
3Com Switch 7700 4-Slot Switch Fabric Module is only required for sparing or
replacement.
The switch fabric module is the core of the 3Com Switch 7700
system. The switch fabric performs route calculation and provides all Layer 3
switching functionality. It also performs Layer 2 switching between interface
modules and where on-board Layer 2 switching is not possible.
The 3Com
Switch 7700 4-Slot Switch Fabric Module supports an optional sub-module to
deliver four ports of high-performance Gigabit directly from the switch fabric.
Sub-modules are available in two port configurations: 10/100/1000BASE-T
copper Gigabit; and 1000BASE-X
GBIC Gigabit. The sub-module capability is particularly helpful when Gigabit
Ethernet ports are required for an uplink when using fast Ethernet modules in
the chassis payload slots.
Based on the address-forwarding table of the
switch fabric module, the hardware performs line-speed switching of Layer 2 /
Layer 3 data packets. VLANs, link aggregation, QoS traffic classification and
prioritization, and ACLs (Access Control Lists) are also supported by the
hardware.
In addition to switching functions, the switch fabric module
performs control and management functions for the system. The management channel
performs such functions as initialization and configuration of the system, data
packet learning, protocol processing, and network management. It also provides
environmental monitoring, software upgrade and interface module
control.
The switch fabric module is essential for 3Com Switch 7700
system operation and must be installed into the top slot to connect to the
chassis backplane.
Optional fabric sub-modules available for additional 10/100/1000BASE-T or
1000BASE-X connectivity
Network protocols supported: TCP/IP, ARP/Proxy ARP, DHCP
Multicast protocol support: GARP/GVRP/GMRP, IGMP, PIM-DM/SM, DVMRP
IP routing: RIP (V1/V2), OSPF V2
Higher bandwidth and added reliability through link aggregation to create
virtual connections
Logical segmentation of the network supported by VLAN. Multiple overlapping
tagged VLANs support aggregated links and extension throughout the
network
Improved network security and bandwidth availability with static routes;
default route is used to shorten time for route selection.
Quality of Service (QoS) functions: traffic classification, DiffServ
service, IEEE 802.1p service, traffic bandwidth limitation, and traffic
bandwidth guarantee
System configuration: English CLI through console port for local or remote
Telnet or SNMP v3 access. Plain ASCII text configuration files enable faster
setup of multiple similar systems. RMON and SMON support.
System test and diagnosis: power-on self-test and command test; current
status of system modules, cards, ports, chips and tasks; query memory space,
address table, packet buffer, flash memory capacity, queue and current message
number; supports loopback test at different levels from card to port
Software upgradability: multiple software upgrade modes via Switch Fabric
Console
