Gigabit Ethernet Redundant Switch Fabric for the Switch
7700R The Switch Fabric Module is the core of the 3Com Switch 7700
system. This module provides optional fabric redundancy for the Switch 7700R,
with sub-one-second fabric failover.
The Switch Fabric performs route
calculation and provides all Layer 3 switching functionality. It also performs
Layer 2 switching between interface modules and where on-board Layer 2 switching
is not possible. Based on the address-forwarding table, the hardware performs
line-speed switching of Layer 2 / Layer 3 data packets. VLANs, link aggregation,
QoS traffic classification and prioritization, and ACLs (Access Control Lists)
are also supported by the hardware.
In addition to switching functions,
the Switch Fabric Module performs control and management functions for the
system. The management channel performs such functions as initialization and
configuration of the system, data packet learning, protocol processing, and
network management. It also provides environmental monitoring, software upgrade
and interface module control.
The Switch Fabric Module is an option for
the 3Com Switch 7700R system operation and must be installed into the second
slot to connect to the chassis backplane.
Sub-one-second fabric failover
Network protocols supported: TCP/IP, ARP/Proxy ARP, DHCP
Multicast protocol support: GARP/GVRP/GMRP, IGMP, PIM-DM/SM
IP routing: RIP (V1/V2), OSPF V2
Higher bandwidth and added reliability through link aggregation to create
virtual connections
Logical segmentation of the network supported by VLAN. Multiple overlapping
tagged VLANs support aggregated links and extension throughout the
network
Improved network security and bandwidth availability with static routes;
default route is used to shorten time for route selection
Quality of Service (QoS) functions: traffic classification, DiffServ
service, IEEE 802.1p service, traffic bandwidth limitation, and traffic
bandwidth guarantee
System configuration: English CLI through console port for local or remote
Telnet or SNMP v3 access. Plain ASCII text configuration files enable faster
setup of multiple similar systems. RMON and SMON support
System maintenance: status indicators for the module and each interface,
hardware watchdog to protect against system software failure, hierarchical user
authority, operation log and online help functions, alarm level management and
alarm filtering functions, query of system status. Debugging and tracing
functions provide real-time monitoring of system operational status
System test and diagnosis: power-on self-test and command test; current
status of system modules, cards, ports, chips and tasks; query memory space,
address table, packet buffer, flash memory capacity, queue and current message
number; supports loopback test at different levels from card to port
Software upgradability: multiple software upgrade modes via Switch Fabric
