High performance, convergence-ready, modular Gigabit
switch
The 3Com Switch 7700 4-Slot Starter Kit provides the foundation
for delivering performance, security and quality of service in a modular
four-slot chassis.
This 4-slot chassis is particularly suited for
workgroup aggregation or small core deployments, having three module slots and
one switch fabric slot. It supports up to 60 Gigabit ports or 144 Fast Ethernet
ports using optional switch modules. An additional four Gigabit ports can be
accommodated in the switch fabric using an optional sub-module.
The
starter kit contains the actual chassis with pre-installed power
supply, a fan
assembly, and the switch
fabric.
An available sub-module for the fabric provides additional 1000BASE-SX
GBIC or 10/100/1000BASE-T
ports.
The 4-slot chassis has dual power inputs and requires just one
power supply for operation (initial power supply included in the 3Com Switch
7700 4-Slot Starter Kit). An optional second power supply can be added for N+1
power redundancy. While there is a third power supply bay in the unit, this bay
is not operational.
The backplane provides interconnection for all areas
of the switch. Management and control signals, high-speed data signals, and
power for the modules are transmitted over the backplane.
Fan and power
supply monitoring signals are transmitted to the switch fabric via the
backplane.

The backplane is passive (contains no active components) for the highest
reliability
Thermal shutdown: temperature sensors allow the system to shut down modules
(including the switch fabric module) on a per slot basis if the temperature
exceeds parameters. Operating temperatures are set for the modules individually,
allowing less critical modules to shut down first.
Switch fabric supports an optional sub-module for additional Gigabit
(1000BASE-T or 1000BASE-X GBIC ports) connections.
For enhanced graphical management with extended functionality, 3Com Switch
Manager, available for purchase with 3Com
Network Administrator or 3Com
Network Director, is recommended. For smaller networks, graphical management
of the switch can be done with 3Com
Network Supervisor.
